Artist Statement
Diane Burko’s photography practice is an extension of her painting practice. That background informs her sense of color, texture, atmosphere and space. Nature is presented primarily as abstract and mysterious. Design in the landscape is captured as complicated, ambiguous, and detailed where the point of view is often aerial and sometimes vertiginous.
“My approach to photography is diametrically opposed to how I approach making a painting. My paintings come from a visceral response to the landscape, supported sometimes by research and en plein air experiences. They are complex textured constructs which need to be read simultaneously in the language of paint and space, where not only layers of material, but layers of traditional foreground/background exist. Unlike my painting practice, my motivation in the prints is not to locate place but to reveal new visual phenomenon as well as the environmental realities of that particular place.”
Process Statement
I started my photography practice in 2001creating Iris prints culled from thousands of Kodak slides dating back to the 1970’s. Being that scale has always been a component in my work, I switched to a Fuji 4.5x6 medium format and scanned the film to create 24x30 inch images. However since 2004, digital SLR’s have been my mainstay. I am currently using a Canon EOS 5 Mark II, usually with a 24-105 lens. I am now able to make archival ink jet prints in 30x30, 40x60 and larger formats. All prints prior to 2010 were printed on German Etching Hahnemuhle. Since 2010 I have been printing on 100% Canson rag which I find to produce a richer black.
